Sawdust from Home Depot #20281714 - 07/16/14 03:12 PM (10 years, 10 days ago) |
Hello, After reading up on here and elsewhere for a little while, I decided to inquire in my local home depot about their sawdust. I haven't really found any success stories besides RR's Reishis that he grew on plywood sawdust, but I figured I'd give it a shot. The lowes across the street mixes all of their stuff together so that was a no-go. I also called other home depots and lowes further down the street from me and they said I could come grab their stuff, too... but I wanna test the first batch out first before I start collecting from them, too. Luckily I have connections to get all kinds of mulch from local tree trimmers and I get multiple cubic yards dropped off at my garden and the community permaculture garden that I help run- but I can only use the chips and still need sawdust and have no way to make sawdust from it. I have wheat straw and hardwood fuel pellets, but it's incredibly expensive to get down here in South Florida- I actually have to ship it in from elsewhere, and the straw is actually for Thanksgiving decor. So I'd like to try something new and save money. Noone sells hardwood fuel pellets here, and the only sawmills primarily cut cypress and pine. No wonder there's no local commercial growers here!!!! I plan on growing king stropharia, oysters, ganoderma, gymnopilus, etc. on the sawdust. So with all that said, I really wanna know if I can use homedepot/lowes sawdust and I have everything I need to follow RR's tek from his video. should I give it a whirl? I can start with two to four bags tomorrow afternoon.
I just got a bunch of sawdust from them and the guy claimed that 90-something percent of it was from regular non-pressure treated plywood (mostly pine, I assume). They keep their sawdust from the wall saw thing separate from the other saws in the store, so I suspected that this sawdust might be alright to give a try.
would love some input. thanks.

I just picked up a 40lb bag of pine pellets (for a woodstove) for $5 from the local Lowes (they didnt have any hardwood pellets, pine had to do). I've got 2 bags of it running with reishi right now, put a qt of spawn per bag with something like 4 or 5 qts of sub. It's ripped through it in about 5 days. I think pine saw dust is ok as long as it's aged so the resins are gone. This is my first attempt at edible/medicinals though.

I actually don't have a grow log, but here are the 2 bags. I used RR 2:1 sawdust:woodchip ratio (landlord just chopped down some some saplings and chipped em up all over the yard, no clue what kind they are, just filled a bucket and tried to get as many sticks/leaves out as I could) These were spawned on 7-11 (5 days ago). The one on the right is somewhere close to 90%, the one on the left just has that last corner that hasn't colonized, but I can see myc poking through.

Nice!!!!!! They look really healthy. I have unlimited amounts of oak and pine mulch, so I'm lucky for that at least. I wanna grow Ganoderma zonatum on pine chips, actually. That's the native FL ganoderma.

Cool- what does it look like on agar? I've never cloned or have seen them on agar. Aren't they really tough and hard to clone??

About like what the myc in the bag looks like, thick and white. I got one, as an antler, it was pretty easy, just broke off the fresh tip and cut a few sections out. One was a mature conk, that one was tough. I ended up grabbing and ripping it in to shreds (like you'd rip open into an envelope). Every time I ripped, I'd take a tissue from the (previously) unexposed section, it was large enough that I could rip it into about 5 or 6 pieces to get unexposed tissue.
